If you’re anything like me, you want your cat to enjoy a little sunshine and fresh air without the worry that something could happen to them. Living in the country, I’ve seen firsthand how many predators linger and hover around waiting for the right, wrong opportunity.
Hawks circling overhead, coyotes roaming the fields at dusk, and even the occasional fox that’s a little too curious for comfort are spotted out here on a regular basis.
When I first started letting my cats spend time outside, I thought supervision alone would be enough. But it only took one close encounter with a hawk for me to realize that “keeping an eye out” wasn’t enough protection.
That’s really what prompted me to get serious about looking into outdoor cat enclosures and I can’t emphasize to you enough how much peace of mind they bring not just to you, but to your cats as well.
They truly create a safe way for our cats to enjoy the outdoors without the risks that comes with roaming free. Whether you live in the countryside like I do or in the middle of a busy city, even though they may look a little different, the threats are still very real.
So in this guide, I’ll be sharing my best tips on how you can use Outdoor Cat Enlcosures as a way to safely give your cat outside time while also protecting them from the dangers of predators, cars and even other cats.

Why Cat Safety Enclosures Are Worth It

If your cat loves looking out the window or pawing at the door, an outdoor enclosure or catio might be one of the best gifts you can give them. It gives them a safe place to soak up the sun, breathe fresh air, and watch birds or bugs all while staying protected from danger.
Here are a few safety benefits for your cat:
- They keep cats safe from predators like hawks, coyotes, and stray dogs.
 - They prevent escapes and fights with territorial neighborhood cats.
 - They reduce stress and unwanted behaviors like scratching or spraying.
 - They provide natural enrichment that supports both mental and physical health.

I can’t tell you how much calmer my cats became once they had a safe space outdoors. They come inside more relaxed, less anxious, and ready to nap instead of pacing around the house or shredding the furniture.

Protecting Cats From Hawks, Coyotes, and Other Predators
Country living has its perks like open skies, fresh air, and plenty of space, but it also means sharing that space with wildlife. Hawks and owls are a real concern, especially for smaller cats. They move fast, and even a moment’s distraction could be dangerous. Coyotes, foxes, and raccoons can also be bold when searching for food, especially at night.
This is when a sturdy outdoor enclosure becomes essential. A roofed or mesh-covered catio keeps your cats out of sight from hawks and prevents larger predators from getting close. Strong, chew-resistant wire mesh and secure locks stop wildlife from breaking in, while elevated shelves give your cat safe places to perch and observe the world.
For those in suburban or city areas, the threats may be different but no less serious. Hawks still show up, and dogs, territorial stray cats, or even traffic can pose danger.
And while the “concrete jungle” might sound safe, it’s not always the best playground for cats. There are limited places to climb, and the noise alone can be stressful.
How To Protect Cats From Wildlife
When it comes to protecting cats from wildlife, enclosures are the best middle ground between safety and adventure. Cats still get the enrichment they need like sunlight, movement, and stimulation but without risking their safety.
Here are a few things that have worked well for me:
- Choose an enclosure with a roof. It keeps hawks and owls out while offering shade and rain protection.
 - Use heavy-duty mesh or wire. It’s stronger than netting and prevents claw damage or predator intrusion.
 - Avoid leaving food outside. It can attract unwanted wildlife like raccoons or opossums.
 - Add hiding spots and perches. Cats feel more confident when they can observe from a safe, elevated space.

If you live where coyotes or snakes are common, consider burying a few inches of mesh beneath the enclosure to stop digging. It’s a simple trick that gives extra protection for peace of mind.
Smart Cat Protection Strategies
Protecting your cat doesn’t mean limiting their world. It means creating a safer version of it. Here are some cat protection strategies to consider when planning your setup:
- Match your enclosure to your environment.
If you have a small yard or patio, vertical or modular cat enclosures are great space-savers. You can find options in our Best Outdoor Cat Enclosure for Small Yards guide. - Keep it close to home.
Attaching the enclosure to a window or patio door lets your cat come and go safely and keeps them near you. - Add comfort and enrichment.
Include scratching posts, cat-safe plants, and cozy resting boxes so your cat can relax and play outdoors comfortably. - Do regular safety checks.
Look for loose mesh, gaps, or weak spots that wildlife could exploit. - Balance visibility and cover.
Cats love to watch the world, but they also need shade and a quiet space to hide when they feel overstimulated.

This is a really good idea. Living in the city, our cat gets to go out whenever she likes, but in the country it must be worrying for cat owners, and having that peace of mind, as well as giving your cat the pleasure of enjoying the outdoors in safety is a priceless gift.
With the enclosure, would the cats have any way of getting out and then knowing they can return if they feel unsafe, or is it totally sealed so that the cat needs to stay in the enclosure?
Hi Michel,
That’s a great question, and I really appreciate your thoughtful perspective! You’re right, giving cats a safe way to enjoy the outdoors brings such peace of mind, whether you live in the city or the countryside.
Most outdoor cat enclosures are fully enclosed for safety, meaning your cat can’t wander out freely. However, some cat parents add tunnel systems or window connections that let their cats move between the house and enclosure on their own terms. This setup gives them that sense of freedom while keeping them protected from traffic, predators, and other risks.
If you’d like to see how that works, I recommend checking out our guide on connecting your catio to your home. It covers a few creative ways to give your cat safe independence outdoors.
Thanks again for stopping by and sharing your thoughts, I love how you described the joy of giving cats a “priceless gift.” It truly is.
